Lower Danubian Limes in Notitia Dignitatum manuscripts.
The focus of the paper are plates XXXIX, XL and XLII in the manuscripts of the Late Roman Notitia Dignitatum. These pages display depictions of 23 Late Roman fortifications located along the Danube Limes, in the provinces Dacia Ripensis, Moesia Secunda and Scythia. Chronological and stylistic analysis of these images as well as comparison of the depictions to other medieval documents (or numismatic data) illustrate the links between the manuscripts and their visual similarities, suggesting a retrospective line back to (now lost) Codex Spirensis.
